March 18 What's in a name!What's in a name anyway!
I've had many different names and taken on many identities in my lifetime..You might say, oh my, is she a secret agent? NO, of course not and If I were I couldn't tell you. Let me explain.
I was born in San Diego, CA. to Mary Esther DuPass, she was married to Robert, so my name was Elizabeth Lee DuPass, but wait a minute...I was taken out of the hospital by Grace Ott who was married to another Robert. Robert and Grace then became my parents, so now my name was Elizabeth Lee Ott and we moved to Narragansett, RI. where I grew up and went to school. But that's just the beginning!!!
I wanted to get my driver's license and needed a birth certificate or adoption papers, but instead found out, the Ott's never adopted me, but kidnapped me. Okay, so now, I need a name change to be legal so I can get my license. Are you with me so far?
A few years pass and I'm 21 now. I meet a man who says he loves me and wants to marry me...I say yes. I'm thinking, I can finally have a name that is truly mine and it's legal. So, meet Elizabeth Lee Mulvey, married to Timothy and they live happily ever after...But wait!
Timothy has a drinking problem and when he drinks, he likes to beat on women. Oh, this just won't do! Elizabeth heads for the hills, or to be more precise- The US Air Force while she awaits her divorce. I kept my married name for a few years because, what the hell...I earned it!
I met a man named Mike, lets just say for law suit purposes, his last name is Dreamy. And he was! He loved me so much, he left his home is RI and followed my to my first base in Biloxi, MS. We lived together for a couple of beautiful years until I wanted to buy a home with him. He resisted this notion, so I bought it anyway. We got pregnant a few short months later and for a while everything was okay, just okay! He didn't want any children or the resonsibility of children even though he helped me raise my daughter. He refused to pay child support so it ended rather badly, but my son took his name.
Now I have two children, Tracy and Michael, they both have different last names: Ott and Dreamy. Now remember, my last name is still Mulvey. Here's the dilemma! The AF does not take kindly to anything which is not wrapped up nice and neat, so my commander suggests I find one name and stick to it. My natural mother whom I met when I was 18 told me my father's name was Stewart, so Stewart it is...We all change our last names to Stewart. So, now I'm 30 and decide to go on a mission...In search of my name, my true name! For all of us.
A good friend of mine asked me what I wanted for my 30th birthday. That was easy...To find my father and his name. Last known whereabouts in 1956 was Arlington Heights, IL. I found him in MO., but he was dead and my last name is spelled Stuart. Well I had a 50-50 shot at that and blew it! So now me and the kids are stuck with another name that doesn't belong to us.
It doesn't end there...Dreamy is left in MS. while the kids and I head off to...Minot, ND. for two years. I still can't figure out whose Corn Flakes I pissed in to get that assignment. Anyway, I took an extended overseas tour to get the hell out of there and ended up in a war zone in Panama Canal (before Noriega left), what an adventure. This was where I met husband #2, Mr Jon Wayne Hoover. Now Jon was a very good husband, in the Army, loved the kids, blah, blah, blah, but... He got out of the Army to follow me to AR., our next base. You may see a pattern here...that's two that have followed me around the world. Hmmm!
Now, Jon had very little experience with kids, so when Tracy hit 17, it was a new thing for him, and lets face it, teenagers are hard on everyone, but if your not experienced with kids at all... you are dead! Long story short...It was my daughter or my husband! I'm a great Mom, so I chose my daughter! On to my next name.
Many boyfriends later, no husbands. I just settled in with Stewart for a while. Proud of me? Well, don't get too comfortable! I met a guy who was on one of those dating sights, just minding my own business and ended up getting married to him to save him from a fate worse than death...deportation! Well, maybe it didn't go exactly like that. I wanted Love, doesn't everyone? This was my shot, right? Not, he left for Belgium, but I followed him. No, not to live there, but we had a great vacation together and I still consider him a great friend. I'll be going back. My last name was Vermeulen.
By the time I divorced Dirk, i had met Walid. He was cute and had a nice A--. Okay, so I may not have been in Love with him, but Lust is a great thing when you're 49 years old. Anyway...Yes, you guessed it! We got married and as usual, my brain must've been on vacation. Was it the fact that he was a Muslum and I wasn't or maybe that he was younger than my daughter, or he was from Egypt and his culture was way out there? So many reasons this would never work...Pick one! Okay, so in a nutshell, this is my name: Elizabeth Lee DuPass, Ott, Mulvey, Stewart, Hoover, Stewart, Vermeulen, Nasr, Stewart. Well, I guess Elizabeth's are determined to find happiness and get married, just ask Elizabeth Taylor. This Elizabeth has come to an epiphany...I'm happy without a permenant man in my life. I told my kids...Mom is just going to live in sin and be happy outside of marriage. Some people just shouldn't be married and I'm one of them. |
